Spin Cycle

The Spin Cycle — HEVIS Micro-Enterprise Project

What is The Spin Cycle?
The Spin Cycle is an innovative micro-enterprise initiative designed to generate income while addressing everyday challenges in resource-limited communities. Based on a bicycle-powered laundry/washing system, it offers a sustainable, dignified model of business that fits within the HEVIS Center’s broader mission of empowerment, inclusion, and local impact.

The concept stems from a design originally developed for use in developing communities — a tricycle or bicycle-mounted washing system that allows operators to provide laundry services without needing electricity.

How It Works Under HEVIS

Locally managed micro-enterprise: Students, graduates, or community members connected with HEVIS are trained to operate and maintain a Spin Cycle unit, turning it into a small business.

Sustainable income generation: Profits from laundry services help cover costs such as supplies, maintenance, and even contribute toward HEVIS’s ongoing operational support.

Dual mission: service + empowerment: The Spin Cycle meets a real community need (affordable laundry), while also giving participants vocational skill, entrepreneurial experience, and a sense of ownership.

Mobility & reach: Because the washing unit is mobile, it can serve households within slum areas more easily than fixed laundromats, increasing reach and flexibility.

Low overhead: By relying on pedal power instead of electricity and designed for simple maintenance, the model is suited for environments where utility access is limited.

Why It Matters

Economic dignity: Instead of handouts, the Spin Cycle gives participants a vehicle to earn for themselves and their families.

Scalable & replicable: Once proven, the model can be replicated in other neighborhoods or communities, multiplying the impact of HEVIS’s work.

Aligned with mission: The project is consistent with HEVIS’s focus on independence, inclusion, and sustainable support — it’s not charity; it’s empowerment.

Community ripple effect: Beyond the operator, nearby residents benefit from access to affordable laundry services, potentially improving health, hygiene, and quality of life.

Stories & Potential

Imagine a young person graduating from HEVIS’s vocational training, then pedaling through Babadogo, stopping door to door, collecting laundry, washing it, and returning it clean. Their profit allows them to pay rent, support family, or save toward further education.

In media and design literature, SpinCycle projects in other regions have demonstrated success in reducing the time burden of washing, cutting water usage, and improving local livelihoods — especially in areas lacking electricity.
